Since then, there has been an enormous amount of chatter within the Disney online community regarding Animal Kingdom’s new initiative and I thought that this would be an opportune time to share a Disney blog site link that I regularly read that recently provided a first hand review of this new dining opportunity. The writers of this blog are Orlando based, work within the Disney travel industry and can be relied upon for accurate, non biased reviews of what is happening within the parks.

G’day, Aj here and as you may of already guessed, I love the food and wine festivals at Epcot and at the Disneyland resort, and as I write this, I am starting to get excited about my visit to Disney’s next gastronomical offering.

From today to June 7, 2009, a World Celebration comes to Disneyland Resort. This six-week festival showcases California’s rich fusion of flavors. Enjoy cooking demonstrations, seminars and recipes that reflect the Golden State’s regional and culinary diversity at the Fourth Annual Disney’s California Food & Wine Festival.

The line up this year in California looks to be better than ever, with larger food portions of all of our favourites including the delicious sliders, cheddar cheese soup and Lobster pops.

More than 600 complimentary experiences will be available at the fourth annual Disney’s California Food & Wine Festival, including culinary demonstrations, children’s programs and wine and spirits seminars. In addition, food and wine aficionados will get tips from Disneyland Resort chefs, mingle with noted winemakers and celebrate at the spectacular ticketed events, including the gala Festival finale “Taste Food-Wine-Life.”

Featured celebrity chefs, including Guy Fieri of the Food Network, along with nearly 100 Disneyland Resort chefs will conduct cooking demonstrations that showcase their talents and an international mix of delectable dishes. Guests will collect cooking tips while they watch the pros in action, discovering new twists on timeless classics and sampling the festival cuisine. Guests will also taste delicious festival-inspired dishes at the Wine Country Trattoria, Pacific Wharf Café, Farmer’s Market and other eateries inside Disney’s California Adventure park.

Guests will enjoy several new signature events this year.
• Behind the Scenes With… – Unique opportunities to share food, wine and conversation with cooking personalities from popular television programs and celebrity winemakers. The stars include Guy Fieri (“Guy’s Big Bite”), Keegan Geerhard (“Food Network Challenge), Tommy Lasorda (Lasorda Wines), and John and Nancy Lasseter (Lasseter Family Winery). The evenings begin with tasty appetizers and exquisite wines, followed by question-and-answer sessions hosted a special chef.

• Sweet Sundays – The sweetest of all events features a light buffet breakfast and sparkling wine at the Golden Vine Winery at Disney’s California Adventure. Guests will see demonstrations and taste three signature desserts created by acclaimed pastry chefs, including chefs from Sweet Cheeks Baking Co. in San Diego and Cake Monkey Bakery in Los Angeles.

• Festival Wine Walks ¬ Guests will explore wines of the world, or a single region, when they purchase a tasting passport and select up to four tastes of spectacular wines. A tasting tour that features craft brews will also be available. Delicious wine country tapas that complement the beer and wine will be available at The Lounge at the Golden Vine Winery.

• World Celebration Dinners – Disneyland Resort chefs will create an elegant menu that blends the food, wine and celebrations of regions around the world. France, Japan, Korea, Italy and Spain will be featured.

• Master Sommelier Michael Jordan, of the award-winning Napa Rose restaurant, will add a new class to his “Introduction to Wine Tasting.” The “Advanced Wine Class” includes three two-hour sessions that take guests to the next level in their knowledge of wine regions, varietals, growing and harvesting techniques. Both entertaining classes will offer training as well as a blind tasting to test the participants’ skills.

Events returning for 2009 feature Disneyland Resort chefs and premier winemakers.
• Winemaker Dinners – Disneyland Resort chefs will partner with premier California winemakers to prepare outstanding culinary delights at six exclusive “Winemaker Dinners,” on selected Friday nights. Each Festival meal will be paired with award-winning vintages and served at Steakhouse 55, inside the Disneyland Hotel.

• Napa Rose Cooking School – Disney Executive Chef Andrew Sutton will once again lead this hands-on course that sells out quickly. Each class will create and enjoy a themed meal paired with wines and each class member will go home with an official chef’s coat to commemorate the experience. This amazing opportunity takes place in the show kitchen of the renowned Napa Rose restaurant at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa. Guests must be at least 18 years of age.

• Festival Wine Receptions – Guests will have an opportunity to enjoy a beautiful sunset and weekend evening under the stars, on the patio of the Golden Vine Winery inside Disney’s California Adventure park. While sampling from a variety of selected wines and enjoying hot and cold hors d’oeuvres, guests will meet fellow wine enthusiasts, make new friends and discover new favorite wines.

Disney is synonymous with family fun, but did you know Florida’s Disney resorts and parks have some of the most innovative pools on Earth? One of my favorite places to go when I’m really stressed out (such as after April 15th!) is Typhoon Lagoon. While the rest of the family frolics all over the park, I’m content to spend the entire day reclining on an inner tube going ‘round and ‘round in Castaway Creek, a 2,100-foot river circling the park through gorgeous colorful flowers, misty rain forest and a hidden grotto. At least my family knows exactly where to find me…

 

Upon entering Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon, a 53-acre themed water park, visitors find themselves in a tin-roofed village cluttered with marine wreckage and cargo left by a big storm. In Shark Reef, swimmers come face-to-face with colorful creatures when they snorkel through a 362,000-gallon saltwater pool filled with brightly-colored tropical fish. Other guests can watch the snorkelers through the underwater portholes of a wrecked ship in the center of the reef. Three water slides drop guests down a mountain at speeds up to 30 mph and three different rafting adventures provide even more water fun. A lagoon boasts one of the world’s largest artificially created waves for body surfing.

Hi guys, Stephen here from Sydney, Australia.

 

Here is my review of Cruzin DCA on Segways. It is a early start for this tour and you need to meet a cast member at 7:30 am at guest relations. They told us to stand near the letter “C” and they would find us. You are then taken to a room at the back of guest relations to watch a video about the segways and how to ride. They also offer a light breakfast of coffee, tea and pastries.

 

Once the tour begins, youare taken by the cast member to in front of Monsters Inc where you get to have a go at driving the segways. These segways are so much fun to ride and easy to learn. Then you head off to tour the park and stop at many points where the cast member tells you about things in that area that you would not normally know. The tour allows you to see the park from a very different perspective including the large drop at Grizzly River with no water in it and it even allows you to go through redwood creek challenge on the segways. The tour takes in the whole park and some of the back stage areas.

 

At the end of the tour you get you picture taken near the Hyperion theater.You are given a nice souvenir photo and Pin. I think this tour is realy cool and would definitley recommendit to others.

 

This tour takes about 3 hours and costs $99 and is worth every cent. I have attached a photo of my wife and I enjoying the segway tour.

Formerly known as the Disney Dining Experience (DDE), the Tables in Wonderland membership still gives Florida residents and Annual and Seasonal Passholders awesome dining discounts and benefits. Your Tables in Wonderland card can be used at select Disney World restaurants to receive a 20 percent discount on all food and beverage, including alcohol for your entire party, up to 10 guests.

Florida residents can purchase the Tables in Wonderland membership for $100 per year and Passholders can purchase membership for $75 per year. An additional card for a spouse can be purchased for an additional $50 per year. However, if you are planning on having a majority of your meals at the Walt Disney World Resorts with your spouse, there is no need to purchase a second card.

This is a membership that will pay for itself in just a few meals at a Disney restaurant. For example, a family of four’s average sit down meal can run up to $150. With your Tables in Wonderland card your savings would be $30, paying for the card in anywhere from three to four meals. As a Florida resident or Passholder, I am sure that you have more than four meals at the Walt Disney World Resorts within a year’s time.

Restaurants included in the Tables in Wonderland dining membership are located throughout the Walt Disney World Resorts and Theme Parks. There are more than 50 participating restaurants that offer discounts with your membership card. Regardless of your party’s size there is an 18 percent gratuity added to all food and beverage purchases made with your membership card.

Other benefits you will receive with your Tables in Wonderland membership card include complimentary theme park parking if your sole reason to visit is for dining. You will pay for parking upon entering and then after eating, take your receipt, parking ticket and Tables in Wonderland card to Guest Relations for a refund for parking. Here are the top 5 Central Florida theme-park rides among those that have generated the most personal-injury lawsuits during the past 5 years. Eleven others — from Disney World’s peaceful boat ride, It’s a Small World, to SeaWorld’s high-speed roller coaster, Kraken — have each attracted 2.

Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls, Universal Orlando. Lawsuits: 7.

Mission: Space, Epcot, simulator. Lawsuits: 5. Claims: Heart attack; cervical damage; unspecified other injuries involving ride movements.

Walt Disney World Jungle Cruise skippers wow fans at Tokyo Disney By Dewayne Bevil | Sentinel Staff Writer

The journey to Tokyo required stamina, comedic timing, a long flight and a boatload of puns for two Jungle Cruise skippers at Walt Disney World.

Cast members Beth Schafer and Alex Williams represented the Magic Kingdom this month at a global gathering of skippers as part of Tokyo Disney’s 25th anniversary celebration. In Japan, Jungle Cruise is extremely popular, Schafer said.

“To them, it has this weird almost cult-classic following,” she said. “When they heard that Jungle Cruise skippers from around the world were coming — and we were billed as the best from around the world — they just thought it was the greatest thing.”

The enthusiastic response included autograph requests and long lines forming for rides.

 

“They screamed like we were the Jonas Brothers or something,” said Schafer, 25.

On Jungle Cruise, which opened with the Magic Kingdom in 1971, guests ride a tramp steamer past assorted animatronic animals and angry natives. The skipper narrates the voyage with one-liners — you might say corny ones — about the scenes.

Williams and Schafer were among 35 Magic Kingdom workers who competed to be named the top skippers. They performed the trademark spiels before company bigwigs and won a nine-day trip to Japan.

Animal House: Backstage at ‘Lion King’

 

I loved this article about Disney’s beloved Lion King Show on Broadway that was published on March 4, 2009 in the New York Times. I hope that it makes you laugh as much as it for me. Enjoy…. Aj

 

At the first costume change of “The Lion King,” the Disney show on Broadway, one of the zebras came offstage announcing he was ready for a drink. Moments later, at the second change, a hyena mocked the star of the show – he was out there in the footlights – with a torturous falsetto and a wink.

At the third change, the lions discussed transvestites and their comparative modes of fashion. By the fourth change, someone else – he might have been a rhino – was flouncing like a model in the stage-right aisle, wearing nothing but a pair of nylon tights.

Backstage at the theater has always been a show within the show, an R- (or even X-rated) drama clearly unintended for the paying crowd in the house. Actors, as a critic once observed, are “rumpots, nymphomaniacs, prostitutes, rakes, liars, cheaters” and the like. They are also – after numerous engagements – likely to be bored stiff by the onstage entertainment and in need of some diverting way to entertain themselves.

“It gets a little bawdy back here – and extremely familiar,” said Ron Vodicka, the stage manager, who was standing in the Minskoff Theater’s quick-change bunker, a cluttered little dugout where the actors swap costumes in between their songs. Mr. Vodicka, a veteran logician, described how even the most demure ingénue will sometimes let a belch loose, adjust her various parts and only then step forward toward the crowd.

To watch the goings-on inside the bunker is to see much more than the manners of the actors, no matter how indecent these might be. It is to witness evolutions that might have startled Darwin as the large ensemble transforms itself from zebras into wildebeests, from hyenas into rhinos, with that peculiar rapid magic of the stage.

Strewn throughout the room are lion costumes, “pod lady” costumes, jungle plant costumes and a get-up that is coarsely called the Nipple Man. All of these hang loosely in open-frame wardrobes attended by dressers who help the harried actors out of their clothes.

Of course, after 4,679 performances, “harried” is a relative term of art. The actors tend to enter and then gossip blithely as the dressers hand them costumes. The audience is fine tonight, but where do you want to go to get that burger? Some do push-ups; some rest lazily in laundry baskets; others merely doze.

The show itself seems incidental to the scene, a slender strip of light that hangs between the curtains back onstage. The audience applause is like distant passing traffic. It rumbles in the wings, then drives off like a truck.

With intermission near, the principal hyenas came offstage and gladly took a load off. Their talk turned swiftly toward the poor child actor one of them had accidentally whacked across the head.

“I hit him pretty good when he was exiting,” she said. “I hope I didn’t hurt the little kid.”

“You can’t hurt children – this is Disney,” said the other.

Now the first hyena pulled a face and switched into a worried tone of voice.

“Goodness, me,” she said. “You’re right. We can’t hurt children. We have to keep it wholesome. We’re a G-rated show.”

• Walt Disney dedicated “it’s a small world” at Disneyland on May 28, 1966. He invited children from around the world, and each child brought water from the rivers and seas of his or her own native land to be poured into the flume.

• Considered a quintessential Disney theme park experience, “it’s a small world” can now be found at five Disney parks on three continents – Disneyland, the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort, Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris and Hong Kong Disneyland.Â

• Guest research at Disneyland has found that one in four Disneyland guests – families with children and those who grew up riding the attraction – consider “it’s a small world” a tradition. They plan a voyage whenever they visit the park.

• More than 256 million guests have experienced “it’s a small world” at Disneyland in California since the attraction opened in 1966.

• “it’s a small world” contains more than 300 Audio-Animatronics figures representing children around the world. It also features more than 250 toys and 80 animated props.

• The tune was composed by Richard M. and Robert S. Sherman, the Academy Award®-winning composers of “Mary Poppins,” at the request of Walt Disney. Arranged and orchestrated with instruments from all over the world – bagpipes in the attraction’s Scotland scene, Peruvian reed flutes, Tahitian drums, etc. – the music not only provides accents to each scene, it underscores the attraction’s theme of unity.

• The design of the new characters replicates the bold yet childlike designs that were created by Disney Imagineering art director Mary Blair, who was honored as a “Disney Legend” posthumously in 1991. Her sense of design and use of color and shapes enhance the storytelling for “it’s a small world” and have informed every version of the attraction since the 1964 original.

• Also helping create the original “it’s a small world” was a team of Walt Disney Imagineers, several of whom also have been named “Disney Legends.” Rolly Crump translated Mary Blair’s two-dimensional designs into the three-dimensional sculptural world. Disney animator and Imagineer Marc Davis created many of the character vignettes, while his wife, Alice Davis, helped create many of the children’s costumes for the New York World’s Fair, Disneyland, Magic Kingdom, Tokyo Disneyland and Disneyland Paris versions of the attraction.

• Disneyland Resort Horticulture creates and maintains a widely admired menagerie of animal-shaped topiary plants outside “it’s a small world.” It often takes five years before a topiary figure is ready for its onstage debut.

• A new “it’s a small world” tradition began in December 1997 when “it’s a small world” holiday debuted. Each holiday season, the attraction undergoes a festive holiday redressing and features new decorations, soundtracks, costumes, props and effects. The show depicts the children of the world celebrating the joys of the season.

As dawn breaks on the Disney parks, we welcome all of you to the first official post of the Travelears Disney travel blog.

 

We have learnt a lot from our first 26 shows (Yes, we are now officially six month’s old), and over the past two months the crew have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to further enhance the show and provide additional value to our listeners and web visitors.

As Walt Disney famously said, “I believe in being an innovator”, and in these times it is more important than ever to deliver timely, relevant and entertaining content to your podcast subscribers and site visitors, as many of us are becoming so time poor and oversaturated with unreverent information and content.

So that was the main objective of the Travelears crew over the past 8 weeks; to develop a podcast, web site and blog that would be a “one stop shop” for the Disney traveller wanting quality information about enjoying the Disney parks.

As part of the process, the Travelears decided to focus on what we were good at. We all agreed that there were already a number of people out there within the online Disney community that were expert Disney historians, Disney trivia experts, Disney music experts, Disney time and motion specialists and in depth Disney reporters that already had quality podcasts, websites and blogs.

These people are fantastic at what they do, and duplicating this effort would neither assist the needs of the online Disney community, nor provide any real help to the people that find Disney so overwhelming, that planning their visits to a Disney park often becomes a very stressful and time consuming ordeal.

 

Our listeners and site visitors have told us that they want and need a central repository of Disney information and one on one assistance with their planning trip planning needs.

So with our vision clearly outlined, the team developed the following objectives for the Travelears:

1) The provision of a “Question and Answer” service for pending travellers to the Disney Parks.

2) The provision of regular overviews of Disney attractions, shows, dining, accommodation and events at each of the Disney parks with a regular focus on Walt Disney World and Disneyland

3) The provision of up to date travel information on issues affecting travel to the parks including predicted crowds, attraction closures and rehabs and special events.

4) The provision of breaking Disney news via a dedicated news team searching out relevant information for travellers visiting the Disney parks.

5) Through partnering with one of the United States premier Disney travel agencies, we will provide our listeners and site visitor’s access to the latest travel discounts, package deals and travel advice for domestic and international travellers.

6) Recommendations for other sources of Disney information including Disney Podcasts, Disney Newsletters, Disney Web Sites, Disney Blogs, Disney DVD’s and Disney Books.

To make this happen, we quickly realised that we had to expand the existing crew to ensure that we could provide quality Disney content on a consistent basis. We wanted people that loved Disney, understood the importance of the online Disney community and had a burning passion to assist fellow Disney travellers to enjoy their vacations and find the best Disney discounts and information.

“The Disney Travelears”

Environmental Tectonics Corporation and Walt Disney World Co. said Tuesday they have reached a confidential settlement in a legal dispute over the Mission: Space ride at Walt Disney World.  The dispute began in late July 2003 when ETC sued the Disney and three Disney subsidiaries over Mission: Space, which was scheduled to open about two weeks later.
