Walt Disney World Resort Offers Sleighful of Merriment with Festive Holiday Favorites Galore

From a sparkling ice castle and symphony of dazzling lights … to legendary international customs and wondrous displays … to magical entertainment and musical delights, Walt Disney World Resort unwraps an enchanting celebration of the holiday season in 2010.

Electrifying fireworks, charming parades and all the sounds of the season help transform the 40-square-mile resort into a winter wonderland where holiday fun begins as early as Nov. 8. Guests who believe “there’s no place like home for the holidays” can enjoy the merriment at Disney and still curl up in a cozy place at home for Christmas … while other guests can spend the holidays at Mickey’s place, since many seasonal happenings continue through Jan. 3, 2011.

Disney’s stocking full of cheer includes:

Magic Kingdom

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party – On 19 magical nights between Nov. 8 and
Dec. 19, holiday revelers can sip cocoa, catch a “snowflake” on a fingertip and catch the spirit of the season through enchanting entertainment that includes live shows, fireworks, carolers and special character meet and greets.

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, which kicks off at 7 p.m. on select evenings (after regular Magic Kingdom closing), is pure, time-honored Disney magic:

Dancing gingerbread, marching soldiers and Santa’s sleigh parade down Main Street, U.S.A. to seasonal melodies during the twice-nightly “Mickey’s Once Upon A Christmastime Parade” … Cinderella Castle is draped radiantly with 200,000 glistening white lights … and “Holiday Wishes, Celebrate the Spirit of the Season” fireworks lights the night sky during a pyrotechnics show orchestrated to holiday melodies.

The night wouldn’t be complete without the forecasted flurry of snowflakes along Main Street, U.S.A. and a warming cup of cocoa in hand. Party-goers also enjoy complimentary cookies and apple slices and enjoy unlimited admission to favorite attractions.

This after-hours family-friendly outing takes place Nov. 8, 11, 12, 16, 18, 19, 28, 30 and Dec. 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 10, 12, 14, 16, 17 and 19. The evening kicks off at 7 p.m. and continues until midnight. Day-of-party ticket pricing is $59.95 ($53.95 for ages 3-9). Advance tickets are available with $6 savings for most dates. Guests can visit Disneyworld.com/christmasparty or call 407/W-DISNEY.

Castle Dream Lights – When daylight has passed during the holiday season, Magic Kingdom guests can behold a breathtaking transformation during the Castle Dream Lights ceremony. Each evening Nov. 8, 2010, through Jan. 3, 2011, Cinderella and favorite characters decked out in holiday garb take to the stage and magically transform Cinderella Castle into an ice palace aglow with 200,000 white lights – a perfect centerpiece to a park all decked out with wreaths, bows, garland and towering Christmas trees.

Guests with visual disabilities will be able to explore Walt Disney World theme parks in a whole new way through an enhanced Disney-designed device that provides detailed audio description of outdoor areas and fits in the palm of a guest's hand.

Beginning June 27, guests with visual disabilities will be able to explore Walt Disney World theme parks in a whole new way through an enhanced Disney-designed device that provides detailed audio description of outdoor areas and fits in the palm of a guest’s hand.

“Disney Parks have long been at the forefront of providing accessibility for guests with disabilities,” said Greg Hale, chief safety officer and vice president of Worldwide Safety and Accessibility for Walt Disney Parks & Resorts. “We are pleased to build on this legacy with new technology that enables us to do something that has never been done before – provide rich audio description in moving rides and outdoor environments.”

Via an interactive audio menu, the newly enhanced Assistive Technology Device lets guests choose the type of information they would like to receive about outdoor areas, from architectural elements to the location of the nearest restroom. The 7.2-ounce device, which utilizes wireless technology to pinpoint its location and take pre-programmed actions, also offers guests at Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort: ·

Detailed audio description of key visual elements, including action and scenery, for more than 50 attractions;

Amplified audio for most theater-type attractions for guests with mild to moderate hearing loss; ·

Handheld captioning that enables guests to read captions while enjoying specific rides; and ·

Activation of closed captioning in pre-show areas where television displays narrate the upcoming experience.

“I know of no other public space in this country – or anywhere else for that matter – that is as welcoming and accessible to people with disabilities as Disney’s theme parks,” said Larry Goldberg, director of media access at WGBH Boston, which is considered a pioneer in developing multimedia and new technologies that make media accessible for the disabled. “With their captioning systems for guests who are deaf or hard-of-hearing and now outdoor environmental description for guests who are blind or visually impaired, Walt Disney World is now more inclusive than ever. WGBH is proud of our role in helping make this happen.”

WGBH teamed up with Disney to deliver outdoor audio description, marking the latest collaboration between the two organizations, which began with the installation of WGBH’s Rear Window® Captioning system in Disney’s theater-based attractions in1996.

Disney has patented and licensed the assistive technology, which could serve a wide variety of retail, commercial and industrial applications. The technology is already being used at the World of Coca Cola Museum, The Hall at Patriot Place and the Dallas Cowboys Stadium and will receive the National Society of Professional Engineers 2010 “New Product Award” next month.

“We are particularly excited to make this technology available beyond Disney Parks and extend accessibility where it was previously impractical,” added Hale. Softeq Development Corporation is licensed to make the technology available beyond Disney Parks.

Other examples of Disney Parks’ services for guests with disabilities include:

Accessible Experiences – From vehicles at Toy Story Midway Mania! that enable guests to remain in their wheelchair to experience the ride to American Sign Language interpretation at live shows, the focus is on providing accessible experiences. ·

Recreation Devices – Specially designed vehicles – such as an adaptive golf cart and sand and aquatic wheelchairs – enable guests to experience leisure activities throughout the resort.. ·

Guidemaps For Guests With Disabilities – Theme park-specific maps provide an overview of services and facilities available for guests with disabilities. Braille guidebooks are also available to assist guests during their visit. ·

Resort Access – Resort hotels at Walt Disney World Resort offer special equipment and facilities for guests with disabilities such as phone text, visual indicator door knocks, sloped-entry pools and aquatic chairs.

The Handheld Assistive Device is offered at no cost with a refundable deposit at Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort theme parks. Audio description of outdoor areas will be available at Disneyland Resort next year. For further information about services for guests with disabilities, guests should visit the Walt Disney World Web site at disneyworld.com or contact Walt Disney World Information at 407-824-4321 (voice) or 407-827-5141 (TTY).

Spending time with family at the special place Walt Disney created with families in mind can be a challenge during any peak season and especially challenging during the Christmas season. It was not long ago when the week before Christmas found Disneyland all decked out for Christmas and the streets pretty empty. Christmas Eve was a virtual “graveyard” in the late afternoon and Disneyland closed early. Well, that was then.

The reality of spending a day at Disneyland during the holidays season is much different now; high prices, long lines and the occasional rude guests are just some of the pitfalls ahead of you. With all this in mind lets take at look enjoying the Disneyland Resort knowing what lies ahead.

Arrive early, the earlier the better. Lets face it, many people are not early risers or may be at work. The evenings can get really crowded as the local Annual Passport holders start getting off work and heading to the Happiest Place on Earth. When you arrive at the tram and the crowds already look daunting, don’t panic. Many people find it much more relaxing to walk the short distance to the Disneyland Resort Entrance than to take the tram when it’s crowded. If you’re not sure where to go, ask one of the friendly Disney cast members. There are actually two routes from the Mickey and Friends parking structure. The first and most direct route parallels the route of the Disneyland tram and does require you cross a street at a light. The second route takes you through Downtown Disney and is a little longer. The Downtown Disney route also offers entrance to Disneyland via the monorail. You can enter Disney’s California Adventure (DCA) through the Grand Californian Hotel. Bag check is usually much shorter at this entrance.

When I visited the Disneyland Resort on Thursday, November 12, 2009 I wasn’t to surprised to see Christmas decorations up around the resort. My daughter had visited the Resort on November 2 for her birthday and told me many decorations were up. She also told me the Christmas Tree could be seen backstage and would soon be moved on stage soon.

Why not start the Christmas season so soon, Home Depot has had Christmas decorations for sale in my neighborhood since mid October.

When I worked at Disneyland those many years ago the Park went under a transformation the night of Thanksgiving and the Christmas season started the next day. To me, thats traditional. It seems in the 21st Century we cannot wait to get to the seasons that keeps giving as soon as possible. Don’t get me wrong I love the Christmas season and I have always enjoyed the Disney parks at Christmas.

I am pleased I have also experienced Walt Disney World during the Holiday Season. It only took me about 31 years from my first visited to Walt Disney World to visit during Christmas 2006.

Disneyland has a wonderful tradition for the Holidays as does Walt Disney World and I encourage anyone who has not visited a Disney park during the Christmas Season to do so if they can. Please visit my Flickr for more Disneyland 2009 Christmas Season photos. I will be updating the site with more Holiday photos as the Season continues to capture my imagination.

Imagine having a personal tour guide to lead the way around the vacation magic of Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort. Now imagine that tour guide is in the palm of your hand and able to point you to a visit with a Disney princess or directly to a Fantasyland attraction.

Starting today, Verizon Wireless customers have exclusive access to Mobile Magic, the first Disney-developed mobile application that enables them to easily navigate Disney parks on both coasts, providing helpful and timely information. With either a swipe of their fingers or the touch of a few keys, guests can access an array of park features on their Verizon Wireless phones, including:

Updated attraction wait times and FASTPASS return times for the park they are in

Locations of their favorite attractions, characters and restaurants, with GPS-enabled maps

Restaurants for breakfast, lunch, dinner or snacks

Tips on what’s happening in the parks

Trivia games to play against other parks guests

New content will continue to be added to the Mobile Magic application as the attractions and opportunities at the Disney parks and resorts continue to evolve.

Exclusive to Verizon Wireless customers, Mobile Magic is available for download and purchase for $9.99 for a 180-day subscription*. Verizon Wireless customers can also text MAGIC to 2777 to purchase the application on a wide variety of feature phones. Download and message charges may apply. Airtime or megabyte data charges may apply when browsing, downloading and using certain applications.

Mobile Magic, marking a first in both the travel and mobile industries, is the outgrowth of a new multi-year relationship between Disney Parks and Verizon Wireless aimed at enhancing the park experience. Verizon Wireless continues to invest in its nationwide wireless network, and the relationship with Disney means Verizon Wireless users will benefit from further enhancements to the Verizon Wireless network in the parks.

Guests are currently using Verizon Wireless’ technology with Disney’s Kim Possible World Showcase Adventure, an ultra-interactive attraction at Epcot at Walt Disney World Resort.

Guests who are not Verizon Wireless customers can access select information, such as park hours, attraction information, entertainment schedules and dining information, through the new m.disneyworld.com and m.disneyland.com mobile Web sites with their browser-enabled phones.

*Message and data rates may apply. Coverage not available everywhere. Availability subject to handset limitations. If you’re under 18, get your parent’s permission first. Valid theme park admission required.

I thought I would share some thoughts and some photos of the new Kidani Village at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. The Kidani Village is a DVC Resort and while on the drive up to the building is a little unassuming and slightly industrial looking at first. Arriving at the front entrance is not as dramatic as arriving at the Jambo House ( the original Animal Kingdom Deluxe Resort ).

The lobby is shockingly small compared to most or the other resorts and from the perceived amount of the accommodations. But the cozy size of the lobby really creates the sense of the “Welcome Home” mentality. Great decor and a focus on savannah opposite the main entrance to the lobby. just a note there isn’t a quick/counter service dinning on premises the store just off the lobby is where you can use your refillable mug.

Before we go out the the Savannah we will go downstairs to the lower level where Sanaa is located.

Sanaa’s cuisine is a melting pot of tastes from the islands of the Indian Ocean that all are part of Africa – Zanzibar, the Seychelles, Comoro Islands, Mauritius and Madagascar. “These islands were on important trade routes with influences from French, Portuguese, Dutch, British, Arab and Chinese traders,” said Chef Bob Getchell. “The diverse spices and flavors give us an endless array of options for Sanaa.”

Sanaa Opening Menu

the warm and inviting atmosphere of the restaurant along with it’s off the beaten track feel will probably be one of those hidden gems at Walt Disney World for the next few years.

With great daytime views of the Savannah daylight dining will provide some great possibilities for viewing the animals out there.

Personally this is where this resort shines! the enclosed Savannah is already providing lots of opportunity to have great viewing of the animals. Along with the large windows and a few balconies to get a good view of the the Savannah ( even if you don’t have a Savannah view room there is as a viewing area that is protruding a good 60 yards from the Lobby area with a fire pit and some seating. This is a great spot to view the animals and also get to interact with the keepers of the animals. while we were there they were training the Giraffes and Ostrich to search for food in specific locations. ( near the guests of course ) .

The Water park area looks like it might be a economic option for the Full Water Theme Parks at WDW. All the Kids were enjoying all the amenities of the park.

All in all I look forward to getting back to the Kidani Village and giving Sanaa a try next time I am at WDW.

New Menu and Portion Sizes

This year the menus locations and portion sizes have been modified. Most notable is the the Wharf doesn not seem to be the hub of all the Food action for the regular guest. In previous years the “Seasonal” Asian Kitchen was used to serve up small sample sized dishes. It appears that this location is not being used at all.

Instead the portions have increased in size to full meal sizes at various locations around the park (see below) and the Cove Bar located above Ariel’s Grotto has been given a full appetizer menu. These Changes are very interesting. I wonder if it is due to the amount of construction going on at DCA and they are trying to spread the extra crowds around the park or if this is an experiment due to feed back from the guests of the previous years?

I for one am looking forward to to the changes except I would have liked to keep the sample sized offerings. It was great to have them all in one locations but I would be quite satisfied to have them spead through out the park. All in all I think this is a great event for DCA and look forward to taking part in the event s during Westfest next weekend!

A few weeks ago, the travelears alerted its subscribers to a new dining initiative called Picnic in the Park. Â

(Original Story Link)

Â

Since then, there has been an enormous amount of chatter within the Disney online community regarding Animal Kingdom’s new initiative and I thought that this would be an opportune time to share a Disney blog site link that I regularly read that recently provided a first hand review of this new dining opportunity. The writers of this blog are Orlando based, work within the Disney travel industry and can be relied upon for accurate, non biased reviews of what is happening within the parks.

The author of this blog post Kathy Werling who is a excellent Disney blogger and part of the crew of the Dis Unplugged Podcast. Her indepth review of Picnic in the Park can be found here and will clear up many of the confusing reports currently out there regarding this unique dining option:  Picnic in the Park at Animal Kingdom Blog

Enjoy the review and if you enjoy Kathy’s review please leave a comment on her post.

G’day, Aj here and as you may of already guessed, I love the food and wine festivals at Epcot and at the Disneyland resort, and as I write this, I am starting to get excited about my visit to Disney’s next gastronomical offering.

From today to June 7, 2009, a World Celebration comes to Disneyland Resort. This six-week festival showcases California’s rich fusion of flavors. Enjoy cooking demonstrations, seminars and recipes that reflect the Golden State’s regional and culinary diversity at the Fourth Annual Disney’s California Food & Wine Festival.

The line up this year in California looks to be better than ever, with larger food portions of all of our favourites including the delicious sliders, cheddar cheese soup and Lobster pops.

More than 600 complimentary experiences will be available at the fourth annual Disney’s California Food & Wine Festival, including culinary demonstrations, children’s programs and wine and spirits seminars. In addition, food and wine aficionados will get tips from Disneyland Resort chefs, mingle with noted winemakers and celebrate at the spectacular ticketed events, including the gala Festival finale “Taste Food-Wine-Life.”

Featured celebrity chefs, including Guy Fieri of the Food Network, along with nearly 100 Disneyland Resort chefs will conduct cooking demonstrations that showcase their talents and an international mix of delectable dishes. Guests will collect cooking tips while they watch the pros in action, discovering new twists on timeless classics and sampling the festival cuisine. Guests will also taste delicious festival-inspired dishes at the Wine Country Trattoria, Pacific Wharf Café, Farmer’s Market and other eateries inside Disney’s California Adventure park.

New Events for 2009

Guests will enjoy several new signature events this year.
• Behind the Scenes With… – Unique opportunities to share food, wine and conversation with cooking personalities from popular television programs and celebrity winemakers. The stars include Guy Fieri (“Guy’s Big Bite”), Keegan Geerhard (“Food Network Challenge), Tommy Lasorda (Lasorda Wines), and John and Nancy Lasseter (Lasseter Family Winery). The evenings begin with tasty appetizers and exquisite wines, followed by question-and-answer sessions hosted a special chef.

• Sweet Sundays – The sweetest of all events features a light buffet breakfast and sparkling wine at the Golden Vine Winery at Disney’s California Adventure. Guests will see demonstrations and taste three signature desserts created by acclaimed pastry chefs, including chefs from Sweet Cheeks Baking Co. in San Diego and Cake Monkey Bakery in Los Angeles.

• Festival Wine Walks ¬ Guests will explore wines of the world, or a single region, when they purchase a tasting passport and select up to four tastes of spectacular wines. A tasting tour that features craft brews will also be available. Delicious wine country tapas that complement the beer and wine will be available at The Lounge at the Golden Vine Winery.

• World Celebration Dinners – Disneyland Resort chefs will create an elegant menu that blends the food, wine and celebrations of regions around the world. France, Japan, Korea, Italy and Spain will be featured.

Both entertaining classes will offer training as well as a blind tasting to test the participants’ skills.

Hi guys, just read this great article by Kelly Shannon at the Examiner.com. This is an extract of part 1 of 3 of a full review of Disney’s pools.

Enjoy, AJ

Â

Disney is synonymous with family fun, but did you know Florida’s Disney resorts and parks have some of the most innovative pools on Earth? One of my favorite places to go when I’m really stressed out (such as after April 15th!) is Typhoon Lagoon. While the rest of the family frolics all over the park, I’m content to spend the entire day reclining on an inner tube going ‘round and ‘round in Castaway Creek, a 2,100-foot river circling the park through gorgeous colorful flowers, misty rain forest and a hidden grotto. At least my family knows exactly where to find me…

Â

Upon entering Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon, a 53-acre themed water park, visitors find themselves in a tin-roofed village cluttered with marine wreckage and cargo left by a big storm. In Shark Reef, swimmers come face-to-face with colorful creatures when they snorkel through a 362,000-gallon saltwater pool filled with brightly-colored tropical fish. Other guests can watch the snorkelers through the underwater portholes of a wrecked ship in the center of the reef. Three water slides drop guests down a mountain at speeds up to 30 mph and three different rafting adventures provide even more water fun. A lagoon boasts one of the world’s largest artificially created waves for body surfing. Â

Walt Disney World has rolled out a first-of-its-kind service designed to let even blind guests “see” its famed attractions.

Called “audio description,” the service provides visually impaired vacationers with a narrative depiction of the scenes that unfold as they move through rides such as the Magic Kingdom’s Haunted Mansion or Pirates of the Caribbean.

It is the latest feature added to a proprietary, wireless system that Disney World initially developed to help disabled guests. The system also includes features for deaf and hard-of-hearing guests, such as amplified sound and hand-held captions.

Through a three-year contract that was recently renewed, Disney licenses the technology to Houston-based Softeq Development Corp., which markets the system to everyone from other tourist attractions to timber companies.

The system relies on a series of remote, infrared sensors and a durable, hand-held device initially built to withstand drops to the ground, rain and other liquid intrusion, and all manner of other punishment dished out during a day in a theme park.

RIDES

SheiKra: North America’s first dive coaster sends riders through a breathtaking three-minute journey 200

feet up, then 90 degrees straight down — and that’s just the beginning. “Floorless” cars give riders an

unobstructed view of the 70 mph rush, and SheiKra was the first dive coaster to incorporate an Immelmann

loop (a simultaneous loop and roll), a second, 138-foot vertical drop into an underground tunnel and a water

feature finale, all packed into a half-mile of steel track.

Â

Kumba: After the blood-curdling thrill of an initial 135 foot drop, you will plunge from 110 feet into a diving

loop, feel a full 3 seconds of absolute weightlessness while spiraling 360 degrees, and tear through one of the

world’s largest vertical loops.

Â

Montu: Feel the ultimate rush on one of the tallest and longest inverted roller coasters in the world! Experience

the thrill of an inverse diving loop and a 60-foot vertical loop while you endure speeds of more than 60 miles per

hour and a G-force of 3.85.

Â

Gwazi: Challenge the dueling forces of Gwazi: two wooden tracks intertwined into the Southeast’s largest and

fastest double wooden roller coaster. Boasting more than 1.25 million board feet of lumber, Gwazi’s Lion and

Tiger tracks offer two distinct ride experiences.

Â

Cheetah Chase: Families will love the curves, drops and corkscrews of Cheetah Chase, a five-story “wild mouse”

style coaster in Timbuktu. With its top speed of 22 mph and 46” height requirement, Cheetah Chase is the

perfect ride for a child’s first coaster experience.

Â

Scorpion: Feel the “sting” of Scorpion’s terrifying 60-foot drop and 360-degree loop at incredible speeds.

The Wild Surge: Launch out of a 35-foot mountain crater up above a towering waterfall for a thrilling view of

Jungala’s village below.

Â

Jungle Flyers: Young adventurers choose from three different flight patterns to soar 50 feet above Jungala’s

village.

sure to get you soaked!

Â

Tanganyika Tidal Wave: Watch out when your seemingly tranquil jungle journey aboard a 20-passenger boat ends

with a sudden plunge down a 55-foot drop, creating a tidal wave that gets everyone sopping wet.

Â

SHOWS

“KaTonga: Musical Tales From the Jungle” takes you on a journey to the heart of Africa in a 35-minute

musical celebration of animal folklore. The show follows a day in the lives of aspiring storytellers, called

Griots, as they strive to become masters of their craft. To accomplish this rite of passage, the performers

Theater features four digital projectors that run simultaneously, and guests wear 3-D glasses to view the visual

effects that allow the film action to vault off the screen. Surround-sound speakers built into the seats and special

effects, including wind and sprays of water, further immerse the audience in this treasure-hunt adventure.

I found this list created by Todd DeFeo (Atlanta Leisure Travel Examiner).  What do you think of it?  In your opinion, what are Walt  Disney World’s best attractions?

Spaceship Earth: Not so much the ride itself as the fact it’s located in Epcot Center’s centerpiece.

Walt Disney World Railroad and Main Street Vehicles: Arguably, if not for the railroad, Disneyland never would have been built. The Disneyland Railroad was a Walt Disney favorite, and the WDWRR would have been as well.

Jungle Cruise: Filled with wry humor, this is a true Disney classic.

Space Mountain: Since 1975, Space Mountain has whisked space travelers around Tomorrowland.

Splash Mountain: One of the newer classics at the Magic Kingdom, join Br’er Rabbit and friends for a trip through the briar patch.

Hollywood Tower of Terror: Based on the classic television show, the Tower of Terror features one of the best finishes ever.

It’s a Small World: Since its introduction at the 1964 World’s Fair, It’s a Small World has been one of the most widely recognized attractions.

Haunted Mansion: There are 999 happy haunts. There is room for 1,000.

Pirates of the Caribbean: The last attraction that Walt Disney himself personally worked on, the attraction has spawned a successful movie franchise.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad: “Hang on to your personal belongings, now – especially them hats and glasses, cause this here’s the wildest ride in the wilderness.”

For Todd’s reasons for including the above in the list and his opinion…please check his article.

You saw the video here a few weeks ago…here’s Disney’s press release with the details…

The newest chef at Walt Disney World Resort may be small in stature, but he’s a big hit with guests enjoying haute cuisine at Les Chefs de France in Epcot. With his flair for French fare, diners of all ages are eating up his whimsical tableside visits.

His name is Remy, and he’s the rat-turned-chef made famous in the Academy Award-winning Disney•Pixar film “Ratatouille.” A new Audio-Animatronicscharacter created by Walt Disney Imagineering, Remy stars in a new guest experience at Les Chefs de France entitled “Bon Appétit from Chef Remy.” Les Chefs de France is one of the restaurants featured at the France pavilion in Epcot.

Six days a week, four times a day (subject to change), a Maître d’ greets diners with a rolling gourmet food cart. Dramatically lifting the lid from a silver-domed cheese platter, the Maître d’ reveals the guest of honor – a six-inch-tall rat with silky-soft fur, pink paws and traditional toque. Chef Remy then comes to life, entertaining diners with sprightly movements and lively banter. Winding their way through the restaurant, Remy and his Maître d’ pal make stops at each table.  In addition to his hijinks, Chef Remy might even bust a move to the beat of different tunes, from the soft sway of a French love song to the hot sounds of hip-hop.

The 40-minute experience provides guests an up-close encounter with the “Ratatouille” star as he laughs, sniffles and even flirts with his new friends.

Remy is part of the Living Character initiative created for Disney Parks by Walt Disney Imagineering.

“By combining technologies, our Living Character initiative creates new levels of guest interaction and brings characters to life like never before,” said Holger Irmler, who worked on the Remy project for Walt Disney Imagineering. “Things we do are so complex, yet our goal is to make them seem so magical to our guests.”

Since its inception, the initiative has been providing guests with a dash of never-before-seen technology and a heaping helping of legendary Disney magic. The first Living Character debuted in 2004 in the form of a large and lovable dinosaur named Lucky.

Not only is Remy one of the newest Audio-Animatronicscharacters created by Walt Disney Imagineering, he also holds the distinction of being the smallest one ever created. Having already wowed guests at Disneyland Resort Paris, Imagineers chose Epcot as the next park for Remy to visit – with Les Chefs de France serving as the perfect Parisian setting for his Walt Disney World debut.

Guests dining at Les Chefs de France are encouraged to make advance reservations by calling 407/WDW-DINE (407/939-3463) up to 90 days prior to their visit.  “Bon Appétit from Chef Remy” is scheduled to take place at Les Chefs de France Monday through Saturday until Sept. 5, 2009 (subject to change).

Hi guys, Stephen here from Sydney, Australia.

Â

Here is my review of Cruzin DCA on Segways. It is a early start for this tour and you need to meet a cast member at 7:30 am at guest relations. They told us to stand near the letter “C” and they would find us. You are then taken to a room at the back of guest relations to watch a video about the segways and how to ride. They also offer a light breakfast of coffee, tea and pastries.

Â

Once the tour begins, youare taken by the cast member to in front of Monsters Inc where you get to have a go at driving the segways. These segways are so much fun to ride and easy to learn. Then you head off to tour the park and stop at many points where the cast member tells you about things in that area that you would not normally know. The tour allows you to see the park from a very different perspective including the large drop at Grizzly River with no water in it and it even allows you to go through redwood creek challenge on the segways. The tour takes in the whole park and some of the back stage areas.

Â

At the end of the tour you get you picture taken near the Hyperion theater. You are given a nice souvenir photo and Pin. I think this tour is realy cool and would definitley recommendit to others.

Â

This tour takes about 3 hours and costs $99 and is worth every cent. I have attached a photo of my wife and I enjoying the segway tour.

Â

Stephen Â

Walt Disney World Press Release

The innovative Magic Your Way ticket plan at Walt Disney World Resort truly empowers guests to create their own tickets for a personally customized vacation.

Guests can tailor tickets to include one to 10 days of theme park visits and add options of their choosing – such as Park Hopper, admission to Disney attractions and experiences outside the theme parks, and non-expiration.

“Whether ordering a computer, a car or a cup of coffee, people want things customized to fit their individual needs,” said Al Weiss, president, Worldwide Operations, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.  “Walt Disney World guests have that same ability to customize their dream vacation by creating a ticket that is just right for them.”

The pricing structure of Magic Your Way includes savings that increase as the guest stays longer. Â The value of the option that provides admissions to attractions and experiences outside the theme parks also increases on tickets for longer stays.

Here are some of the notable features of the ticket plan:

The Base Ticket provides admission to one Walt Disney World theme park on one day.  The parks a guest can choose among are: Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

The Base Ticket may be purchased for one to 10 days.

The per-day cost of admission decreases in steps when multi-day tickets are purchased.  For instance, a four-day Magic Your Way Base Ticket costs less than 75% of the price of four one-day tickets purchased individually.  Per-day cost of a seven-day ticket is less than 45% of the price of seven one-day tickets. And with a 10-day ticket, per-day cost is less than 33% of an equivalent number of admissions using one-day tickets.

The days the ticket is used for admission do not need to be consecutive.

Magic Your Way tickets expire 14 days after initial use unless the No Expiration option has been added to the ticket.

The No Expiration option is available on tickets for two days or more.  It simply means that unused admissions on a ticket have no expiration date.  The cost is based on the number of days on the original ticket – not on the number of unused days – and the cost increases in uneven steps to as much as $200 (on a 10-day ticket).

The Park Hopper option allows the guest to visit more than one park a day. Â The price of the feature is fixed (currently $50) whether Park Hopper is added to a one-day ticket or a 10-day ticket.

Some potential benefits of Park Hopper: (1) taking advantage of the Extra Magic Hours program, which provides Disney resort hotel guests with exclusive time each day in a designated Disney park either before or after regular park operating hours; (2) doing a “sampling” of Disney park experiences during a short visit; or (3) revisiting favorites in several parks “for one more ride” later in a long vacation.

The Water Park Fun & More option entitles a guest to visit a choice of gated Walt Disney World entertainment and recreation venues – currently Disney’s Blizzard Beach water park, Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon water park, DisneyQuest indoor interactive “theme park,” Disney’s Oak Trail golf course, and Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex.

The price of the Water Park Fun & More option is fixed (currently $50), but the number of admissions available to the guest is determined by the number of days on the Base Ticket.  Added to a two-day through 10-day ticket, the option provides a similar number of visits to the guest’s choice of Water Park Fun & More experiences.  On a one-day Magic Your Way ticket, the Water Park Fun & More option provides two admissions to the guest’s choice from among the experiences.

A guest more than recoups the cost of the Water Park Fun & More option by using it for two adult admissions to any combination of Blizzard Beach (regular one-day ticket is $40), Typhoon Lagoon ($40), DisneyQuest ($40) and Oak Trail golf course ($38).

Water Park Fun & More considerations: Guests decide which gated attraction(s) they will visit (e.g., if they have five admissions available and love DisneyQuest, they can visit DisneyQuest five times); and the period for use is 14 days from when the Magic Your Way ticket is first used (unless the No Expiration option has been purchased).

Magic Your Way tickets are available online at www.DisneyWorld.com, by calling 407/934-7639 (407/W-DISNEY), by visiting a local travel agent, and at Walt Disney World ticket locations.

Further to this weeks podcast #36, we are pleased to provide the following WDW Resorts Online Check-in Information.

Â

Walt Disney World hotels have started accepting online check-ins within ten days of your arrival date in WDW. The idea behind this is to reduce the amount of time you spend waiting in line to check in to your hotel. This is accomplished by having you enter your name, address and credit card information online before you leave home.   According to TouringPlans.com, a packet will be waiting for you when you arrive at the hotel, containing your welcome kit and room keys. You’ll still need to show photo ID to pick up this packet.  A separate counter should be available for those guests doing online check-in, but that hasn’t been confirmed.

For some visitors to the Disney World and Universal theme parks, parades and shows are a highlight of the trip. For others, they’re an annoyance, since they often mean blocked sidewalks and annoying clots of immobile people. If you’re not the parade or show type, you can use them to your advantage. While Universal only tends to have parades during special events like Mardi Gras or Grinchmas and only runs its 360 outdoor show during the peak season, Disney’s parades, like Mickey’s Jammin’ Jungle Parade pictured at right, and shows like Illuminations and Wishes run throughout the year. Here’s how they can benefit you:

Avoid lines by going on popular rides during parades and shows. This gives you a pretty long time window, as you’ll also have a quiet span while everyone else is lining up or trying to get a good spot out on the curb, Some of my best times at Epcot have been spent riding Soarin’ while everyone else is way over in World Showcase, gathering around for Illuminations. That brings me to the second tip:

Avoid crowds by positioning yourself properly. Shows and parades tend to draw the crowds to a particular area. When they happen right before park closing, you can get yourself in position to make a hasty exit. For example, in Epcot, if you’re staying at one of the nearby hotels such as Yacht & Beach Club, Swan, Dolphin, or Boardwalk and walked or used Disney transportation to get to the park, position yourself for a fast escape through the International Gateway. You’ll still see the show, and you can be first in line at the boat or first out the gate if you’re planning to walk. If you don’t care about Illuminations at all, finish up your day in Future World and be first in line for the bus or monorail or peel out of the parking lot. while everyone else is stil watching the fire spouting out of the globe.

Get a coveted dining reservation by eating at a time when everyone else is watching a parade or show. Certain advance dining reservations are virtually impossible to get, especially during Disney’s occasional free dining programs. You may be able to snag one if you’re able to eat at a time when the rest of the crowd is watching a show (for example, a ressie that overlaps with Wishes at the Magic Kingdom).

On the flipside, be aware that once the parade or show is over, if the park is still open the crowds will descend on whatever is close by. A good example can be seen at Star Tours in Disney Hollywood Studio. It tends to have a minor line, except for on the busiest days, but if you pass by and the wait time has suddenly skyrocketed, it’s probably because the Indiana Jones stunt show has just let out. The same holds true for Fantasmic, which dumps crowds out towards Tower of Terror and Rock ’N' Roller Coaster if it lets out before the park closes.

There are certain shows that draw crowds you’ll want to avoid at all costs. This is true when it’s a hard ticketed event or something that starts after park closing. For example, at Universal the crowds well during Mardi Gras as concert time nears or on the days of Halloween Horror Nights (guests who have a day ticket and a hard ticket can remain in the park until HHN begins). You can use this to your advantage by heading over to Islands of Adventure when the draw is at Universal Studios. At Disney, the draw may be Extra Magic Hours, with on-site guests coming early to take advantage of the extra time. If you’re not an onsite guest, head over to the park that has the latest hours for the general public.

Making the most of your park time is a delicate balance, but if you pay attention to the show and parade schedules it will give you one more weapon in your commando touring arsenal.

Disney Magic and Disney Wonder are nearly as long as the Eiffel Tower is tall. Each ship is 964 feet long, and the Eiffel Tower is 986 feet high.

If the Disney Magic or Disney Wonder were a land vehicle, it would need an eight lane highway (including median!) to handle its width.

The anchor alone is as heavy as two Tyrannosaurus rex dinosaurs or three elephants. Each ship weights 90 million pounds.

The ship is happy to let you reach out and touch someone with its 1,950 telephones. That’s enough phone cord to run a phone all the way up Pike’s Peak, and then some.

The horsepower of Disney Magic and Disney Wonder’s five engines is equivalent to the power of more than 100 NASCAR racing cars — running at full speed.

Each ship can make 1,200 tons of fresh water from sea water each day — that’s enough glasses of water for everyone in Chicago and Houston combined.

Disney Cruise Line will transport approximately 10,000 suitcases per operating day. If each bag weighs 15 pounds, the team will get a great daily workout: lifting 75 tons.

There are 1,367 miles of cable on the ship — enough to run an extension cord between Austin, Texas and Detroit, Michigan.

The 20,000 gallons of paint it took to paint the Disney Magic (or Disney Wonder) could paint 2,000 average American houses.
There are 5,390 pillows on board.

8,260 cups of coffee are served every day, on board.

Of the 50,000 eggs consumed every morning at breakfast, 1,956 will be scrambled, 552 will be served sunny-side up, 480 will be soft boiled, 984 will become omelets, and the other 976 will be used for various egg dishes.

Top Ten List of why you might want to plan a Disney Fairy Tale Wedding

NY Weddings Examiner just compiled this Top Ten List of why you might want to plan a Disney Fairy Tale Wedding:

1) One-Stop Shopping. Quite simply, everything is here, under one roof, on property–from props and theme sites to costumes, music, flowers, and entertainment. It’s a win-win situation.

2) There are plentiful hotel accommodations in a variety of themes and price ranges to appeal to all of your long-distance guests. In particular, The Grand Floridian, a grand hotel in Victorian style, is within walking distance of the Disney Wedding Pavilion and offers gracious dining and reception rooms.. The Yacht and Beach Club Resorts, New England-style seaside resorts perched right on the water, have a rose-framed Victorian wedding gazebo; the Polynesian Resort at Sunset Pointe, located on the Seven Seas Lagoon, has a palm-tree-shaded grassy knoll where couples often wed–against the backdrop of Cinderella’s Castle at the Magic Kingdom; The Wilderness Lodge, at Sunset Terrace, offers picturesque waterfalls and whispering pines, plus lush gardens that overlook Bay Lake. Blocks of rooms can be arranged through, the main Disney reservation number; call: 407-828-8101.

3) On site-wedding coordinators will help you make your dreams come true. They can plan everything from wedding invitations and stationery needs to officiants, music, and flowers, and hold your hand throughout wedding day. Wedding planners can also arrange for wedding favors, welcome gifts in rooms, and set up a Disney Honeymoon Registry for you and your groom (guests make a contribution to your honeymoon at Disney in place of another gift!). Disney Fairy Tale Wedding planning DVD’s and Classic Disney Music CD’s are also available in most Disney Resort gift shops and many theme park stores. Contact Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings & Honeymoons at: 321-939-4623 or log on to: www.disneyweddings.com.

4) Scores (if not hundreds) of restaurants are located throughout the Disney hotels and theme parks, in varied themes and cuisines. If you prefer one of these venues for a pre-wedding, wedding, or post-wedding celebration or dining event, you can reserve space through the Disney Dining phone number: 407-939-3463, up to 90 days before your stay here.

5) It is easily accessible to kids of all ages (2-92) who might need help navigating the 40 square miles of Disney World. The theme parks provide strollers, wheelchairs, and innovative, wide-bodied, electric “go-carts” (half mini-van, half motorcycle) that enable grandparents and parents to keep up with their families and scooter from one attraction to the next. Front rows at all performances and arena shows are reserved for anyone with a mobility difficulty. Great transportation will also get your guests to and from your wedding celebrations at no extra charge—to them or you.To and from Orlando International Airport, guests hop aboard Disney’s Magical Express—complimentary bus shuttle service to their hotels. The ultra-sleek monorail system and complimentary bus shuttle service also connect visitors to and from the theme parks and hotels—usually every 20 minutes.

6) Recreational extras: Enjoy tennis, golf (5 premiere courses + mini-golf), sailing (on the Seven Seas Lagoon), nightlife and great shopping at Downtown Disney. Go horseback riding and trail blazing on the 700 acres of rural Walt Disney World, led by the wranglers at Fort Wilderness Lodge.

7) Incredible complimentary bonuses will add sparkle to your celebration. Disney cast members in theme costume will animatedly and politely direct guests to where they need to be. Nightly parades of costumed characters fill the streets of the theme parks. At 9:00 p.m. every evening, a brilliant fireworks display cascades through the sky above Cinderella’s Castle in the Magic Kingdom, visible from all Seven Seas Lagoon-facing hotels and restaurants.

8 ) The economy has hit everyone hard, including resort destinations. Disney is now offering great package deals (i.e., discounted Magic Your Way room and dining-plan packages; Book 4 Night, Get 3 Nights Free packages). Call: 407-828-8101.

9)  Rub elbows with celebrities and catch the glitter that might rub off as if it were pixie dust! Everyone in entertainment somehow ends up down here—from Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks to Olympic gold medalists to actors and politicians. The buzz down here is that most celebs like to slip into the Yacht Club and lose themselves in its quiet elegance. Rumor has it that last week, Paula Abdul was at Disney for the opening of the new American Idol pavilion and soundstage. The entire cast of High School Musical is around during the opening weeks of its films. This week, more than once, I’ve personally seen a young blonde who looks a lot like Britney Spears. Is she in Florida? (Stay tuned….)

10) It’s fun! There’s magic in the air….

Walt Disney World and Orlando International Airport completed a deal Wednesday to continue the resort’s free passenger-and-luggage shuttle until at least the end of 2016.  Under the terms of the deal, the airport agreed not to raise the 75-cent-a-passenger fee it charges the resort for Disney’s Magical Express. The previous contract would have allowed the airport to raise the fee to as much as $1.50 a passenger under certain circumstances.  Disney buses ferried just under 2.2 million travelers from OIA to either its resort hotels or cruise ships in 2008, according to airport figures. That works out to about $1.6 million a year in payments to the airport — compared with about $3.2 million were the per-passenger fee doubled.  The previous agreement had been set to expire at the end of 2011. The new pact also gives Disney the option to extend the agreement by another five years, until 2021. Airport leaders have been working to cut costs and raise money — including plans to cut an undisclosed number of jobs — as passenger traffic and revenue tumble amid the global recession. But Jeff Fuqua, chairman of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority, said the agency decided it was better served by not raising Disney’s fee, in return for securing a longer commitment from the company to operate Magical Express.  Because Disney’s Magical Express luggage is processed in a remote hangar at the airport, the service diverts thousands of bags every day away from OIA’s main luggage-sorting systems and claim areas. That eases pressure on the airport to spend money expanding its baggage facilities, Fuqua said.

Universal has seasonal offerings at Mardi Gras (pictured at right) and Christmas, and the Mardi Gras parade adds an extra element by having floats that toss out beads to the spectators.
In the busy season, the unspoken rule for parade viewing is: if you want a good spot, stake it out early. That may sound simple, but two major etiquette issues come up. The first is, even if you’re there early, just how much space can you reasonably expect to take up? Often one or two people will grab a prime spot on Main Street at Disney World an hour beforehand, but try to hold room for their other six family members. Others come along later, see the prime real estate, and try to move in. Mayhem quickly ensues. Or maybe the other family members were there to start with, but needed a potty break or went off to get some ice cream. While they’re gone, someone else tries to move in and you’re got a confrontation on your hands.
