The Walt Disney Company has been a very strong supporter of the Blu-Ray format. So much so, that Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment is putting its faith in a 70-year-old princess to broaden the audience for Blu-ray. And now Disney has announced another industry Blu-ray first. The studio’s next re-release of animated classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which has been in the Disney Vaults since 2001, will be released on Blu-ray Disc on October 6, seven weeks before it appears on standard DVD on November 24. The lengthy advance window for Blu-ray is unprecedented for a major release on the format.
The release will feature state-of-the-art picture restoration and a pristine 7.1 Digital Theater System HD Surround Sound. The Blu-ray/DVD combo pack is priced at $39.99 msrp, while the 2-disc DVD release is priced at $29.99 msrp.
Disney recently has attempted to stagger the Blu-ray and DVD releases of Bolt and Bedtime Stories, with the Blu-ray getting the early release by two days, but those plans were thwarted by retailers putting both versions out for sale early. The seven-week gap for Snow White should help retailers follow the guidelines by alleviating any extra merchandising involved with the two-day intervals of Bolt and Bedtime Stories—one common store complaint with Disney’s staggered Blu-ray/DVD plans.
